The University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, celebrated a significant milestone with its 42nd graduation ceremony on August 18, 2024. This event was graced by Kenya’s President, His Excellency, Dr William Ruto, who was the chief guest, underscoring the university’s prominent role in the country’s higher education landscape. During the ceremony, 1,267 students were conferred their degrees, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
President Ruto, in his address, lauded the university’s contributions to the healthcare sector, particularly its role in training professionals who are making a positive impact across the nation. He commended Baraton for its adherence to high educational standards and its focus on producing well-rounded graduates who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to society. In recognition of the university’s efforts, the president announced a Ksh60 million grant to support the expansion and improvement of its facilities. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in Leadership, further highlighting his leadership role in supporting education in the country.
The event also marked the installation of the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jackson Msafiri Mamba, who succeeded Prof. Philip Maiyo. This leadership transition opens a new chapter in Baraton’s ongoing mission to provide quality education rooted in Christian values.
In his remarks, Dr. Blasious Ruguri, Chancellor of the university and President of the East-Central Africa Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, commended the university’s commitment to a well-rounded education that seamlessly blends faith, academic rigor, and a spirit of service. He highlighted how this approach ensures that graduates emerge not merely with extensive knowledge but with deep spiritual roots and a keen sense of social responsibility.
The graduation ceremony was also attended by Dr. Musa Mitekaro, the ECD Executive Secretary,Dr Andrew Mutero, the ECD Education Director, along with other church leaders, further emphasizing the strong support and involvement of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the university’s activities. This gathering of church and state leaders highlighted the importance of collaboration in fostering education that builds both character and competence.
